All my condolences to all the dancers & staff of Stuttgart Ballet where his soul lives. Such a great loss.

I saw Richard Cragun the very first time as the most amazing Carabosse I've ever seen in Marcia Haydées "The Sleeping Beauty". I was 8 years old and I remember telling my mum after the performance: "I wanna become a ballet-dancer" - and I did. Thank you Ricky!

Über was? Alles!

There are no adjectives to describe Ricky. Educated, kind, handsome, intelligent, interesting and effective and one of the nicest persons you could ever meet on this planet.
He appreciated the smallest gesture that one did for him. He had time for a small talk, he cheered anyone who showed courage in going forward after a hard fall. I remember Ricky showing Peter after his accident in 1979 how to work slowly and carefully to get back his strength. He instructed and encouraged him to move on. Ricky always cared and showed it. He was open minded and one could often see what he was thinking about.
I once made him a Sacher Torte for his 30th birthday. He showed how much he appreciated it. That was his big heart.
He will truly be always the inspiration and guide for many of us to carry out what is important in life. It is rare to find, but he taught us so much and we must live further in his footsteps. He would be proud if we go on celebrating him and how he conducted his life so well.
In memory of our wonderful and beautiful friend who we could always count on!
With love always,

I am very sad to hear that Richard died. We've lost one great artist in this world... In the time I spent with the Stuttgart Ballet, I saw him dancing in many different ballets. He was always great in his role. My special favorite was him dancing in"The taming of Shrew" as Petrucchio. Amazing personality and partner work!
He was also a great guide to the young dancers at the time I was in company. His calmness at rehearsal always helped me not to get nervous. I learned how much feeling dancing can express by seeing him and Marcia dance. Richard meeting John Cranko & Marcia Haydée brought so many Ballet pieces to this world which will probably be carried on and on to the next generations to come. I want to thank you so much, Richard, for your great work. I am glad to have met you and thankful for having been able to dance with you in the company.
Rest in peace! Love,
Maki Fujita (formal Stuttgart Ballet Dancer 1986-1991), September 2012
My memories of Ricky will always be of perhaps the strongest dancer I ever had the pleasure of working with - artistically and physically, as well as musically. And he always displayed a gentlemanly and courteous concern for the musicians who were working for him. Long may the memories of his life and effervescent dancing live on in the minds of all those who saw and appreciated his incredible vitality and artistry on stage.

After all what one does, after all what one can achieve in life, one can fade at once, gone.
Perhaps that can teach us to be more generous with our talents and goods whatever and how many they are. Richard was one of these persons that did not save on others nor retained on any of his talent. He was an example of discipline in the Stuttgart dance family. After all, the only real inheritance of a life is perhaps the memory that we all carry of one and each other.
Thinking over Richard, I certainly do recall to an intensive time of my life, sharing lots of happy and bright moments in common.

Lieber Ricky, RUHE IN FRIEDEN. Werde dich immer in guter Erinnerung behalten ............

My name is Terry Neil Edlefsen. I was a demi soloist with the company for several years. My first introduction with Richard was when I met him on the stage of the Shrine Theater in Los Angeles. He was busy running through that night's choreography, but he took the time to stop and say hello. Less than a year later, after taking an audition class with the company, I was offered a contract by Marcia to join the company. She walked me over to Richard, who was leaning against he barre, and said "this it Terry, our newest member of the company. You met him when we were in Los Angeles." Richard shook my hand, and we talked a bit. I do not remember what we talked about, I was to nervous....meeting this international ballet star.
Richard was a nice guy. He was also an exciting dancer. You could also see how he used his intellect to make his body go beyond its natural ability. His loyalty to Marcia and the company was obvious. Richard, along with Birgit, Marcia, Egon, and John Cranko moved the world with their collaboration.
My condolences, and best regards to all who knew him. Terry

I had the fortune to meet Richard in 2004/2005 in Rio de Janeiro where I live. He became a close friend over the last years of his life and I shall always remember the wonderful stories he told me of the ballet and especially the ballets he had danced during his career.
I was unlucky in that I never saw him performing on stage but could imagine what a marvelous experience that must have been, especially when partnering Marcia Haydée. His memory will surely live on for many years to come and having watched him rehearsing Thiago Soares and Ana Botafogo among others in Rio de Janeiro recently, his last contribution to the continuing of great ballets of John Cranko will hopefully be carried on with this lasting memory of a great dancer and wonderful coach. He was a real friend and companion and introduced me to the Stuttgart Ballet on the occasion of Marcia Haydee's 70th birthday and again during the 50 years gala celebrations in memory of John Cranko. Occasions which I shall always remember with joy. To Richard, in loving memory.

I came to Stuttgart Ballet from the Royal Ballet School soon after Gudi L. and Ricky. He met me at the station and seeing my trepidation assured me that all would be OK. Thirty years later- now as a world star and still looking like an an Adonis - I saw how he had retained that consideration for others. And last year at the reunion I had him say a few words on the phone to my wife in Australia... how sweet he was to her. Dear Ricky, rest in peace. Fond thought always.
